AI Could Eliminate Half of Entry-Level White-Collar Jobs in 5 Years

AI Job Disruption Could Hit Faster Than Any Previous Technology

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has issued a stark warning that artificial intelligence could eliminate nearly half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within five years, potentially pushing unemployment to 10-20%. He emphasized this disruption could occur “faster than anything seen with previous technologies” without proper intervention.

Key Takeaways

  • AI could wipe out 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs in 5 years
  • Unemployment could reach 10-20% without intervention
  • Consulting, law, and finance professions at immediate risk
  • AI may surpass human intelligence across most domains

Which Jobs Face Immediate Risk?

During a recent CBS News interview, Amodei specifically identified entry-level positions in consulting, law, and financial services as particularly vulnerable. “AI models are already quite good at” performing many tasks currently handled by these professionals, he noted.

“If we look at entry level consultants, lawyers, financial professionals, you know, many of the white collar service industries, a lot of what they do, you know, AI models are already quite good at. And without intervention, it’s hard to imagine that there won’t be some significant job impact there. And my worry is that it will be broad, and it will be faster than what we’ve seen with previous technology,” Amodei said.

Tech Leaders Divided on AI Impact

The prediction has sparked intense debate within the technology sector. While Amodei’s concerns are shared by some industry leaders, others including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have rejected the notion of such widespread job displacement.

Amodei expressed particular concern about the pace of change, warning that society might not have “enough of an opportunity to adapt” to the rapid transformation.

Parallel Warnings from AI Researchers

The concerns extend beyond Anthropic. Just days earlier, prominent DeepSeek researcher Chen Deli predicted at a conference in China that AI could take over most human jobs within 10-20 years.

“In the next 10 to 20 years, AI could take over the rest of the work humans perform and society could face a massive challenge, so at the time tech companies need to take the role of defender,” Deli said.

When Will AI Surpass Human Intelligence?

When questioned about AI’s intellectual capabilities, Amodei confirmed he believes artificial intelligence will eventually exceed human intelligence across most domains.

“I believe it will reach that level, that it will be smarter than most or all humans in most or all ways,” Amodei stated.

The Anthropic CEO acknowledged that not all AI developments can be predicted, but emphasized his company is actively working to anticipate potential risks including economic disruption, model misuse, and loss of control over AI systems.
