US and Arab Nations Push UN to Adopt Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan

Key Takeaways

  • The US and key Arab nations are pushing the UN Security Council to adopt Trump’s Gaza peace plan
  • Russia has proposed a competing resolution that excludes Trump’s leadership role
  • The plan includes a transitional “Board of Peace” and international stabilization force

The United States and several key Arab and Muslim-majority nations have jointly called for the UN Security Council to swiftly adopt a resolution supporting President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza. This development comes as Russia circulates an alternative proposal that excludes Trump’s direct involvement.

Broad International Support

Countries backing the US-led resolution include Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Jordan, and Turkey. In a joint statement released Friday, these nations expressed strong support for the resolution “currently under consideration” and emphasized the need for its “swift adoption.”

The statement specifically noted: “The United States, Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Jordan, and Türkiye express our joint support for the Security Council Resolution currently under consideration.”

Plan Details and Timeline

Last week, the United States began formal negotiations within the 15-member Security Council on a draft resolution that would build on the existing ceasefire in the two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas.

According to a draft obtained by AFP, the resolution welcomes the establishment of a “Board of Peace” – a transitional governing body for Gaza that Trump would theoretically chair. This body would have a mandate extending until the end of 2027.

The plan also authorizes member states to form a “temporary International Stabilization Force (ISF)” to work alongside Israel, Egypt, and newly trained Palestinian police. This force would secure border areas and help demilitarize the Gaza Strip.

Notably, the latest draft includes mention of a potential future Palestinian state, a significant addition that was absent in previous versions.

Russian Counter-Proposal

The joint call for swift adoption faces competition from Russia’s alternative draft resolution. The Russian proposal does not authorize the creation of a Board of Peace or the immediate deployment of an international force.

While the Russian draft welcomes “the initiative that led to the ceasefire,” it pointedly omits any mention of Trump. Instead, it requests the UN Secretary-General to explore implementation options and report on potential deployment of a stabilization force in Gaza.
