DoT Launches Portal to Verify Bank Contact Numbers and Fight Scams

Key Takeaways

  • The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has launched a new verification portal on Sanchar Saathi.
  • Citizens can use it to verify if contact details (phone, email, website) genuinely belong to a bank or financial institution.
  • Currently, the portal has significant data gaps, with many private bank entries incomplete and major regulators like SEBI and RBI missing.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced a new online system to help citizens verify the authenticity of contact details used by banks and financial institutions. This initiative aims to combat the rising number of scams where fraudsters impersonate bank officials.

Integrated within the Sanchar Saathi portal, the new feature allows users to search for an institution by its name, website, email address, or phone number. A successful search returns official contact information, including customer support numbers, toll-free lines, WhatsApp contacts, and email addresses.

This provides a trusted method for individuals to cross-check details from unsolicited calls or messages, helping them avoid potential fraud.

The DoT announced the portal on X, stating:

“Empowering Citizens with Safe Digital Choices! Think before you share, scammers often pretend to be from trusted institutions. Always verify using trusted contact on #SancharSaathi before you act. For verification click on this link – https://www.sancharsaathi.gov.in/FinancialInstitutions/fiHome.jsp”

Current Limitations of the Portal

Despite its potential, the portal currently suffers from significant data omissions. While information for most public sector banks is available, entries for major private banks like ICICI Bank are often incomplete, lacking crucial details such as official and WhatsApp numbers.

Furthermore, searches for key financial regulators like the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) yield no results, highlighting the platform’s limited scope in its current form.
