Google Plans AI Data Centre on Strategic Australian Island

Google’s Strategic AI Data Centre Plan for Christmas Island

Google is reportedly planning a major artificial intelligence (AI) data centre on Australia’s remote Christmas Island, a move experts call strategically vital for military surveillance in the Indian Ocean. The plan, linked to a recent cloud deal with Australia’s Defence Department, would position critical AI infrastructure at a key maritime chokepoint.

Key Takeaways

  • Google is in advanced talks to lease land for an AI data hub near the island’s airport.
  • The facility is viewed as a strategic asset for monitoring Chinese naval activity.
  • A new subsea cable will connect the island to Darwin, enhancing communications resilience.

Why Christmas Island Matters for Defence

Located just 350 km south of Indonesia, Christmas Island has become a critical frontline for tracking Chinese submarines and naval movements. Defence officials see its location as indispensable for regional security.

The island’s military value was recently tested in war games involving Australian, US, and Japanese forces. Bryan Clark, a former US Navy strategist who conducted these exercises, emphasized its importance.

“The data centre is partly to allow you to do the kinds of AI-enabled command and control that you need to do in the future, especially if you rely on uncrewed systems for surveillance missions and targeting missions and even engagements,” Clark, now a Hudson Institute fellow, told Reuters.

Securing Communications in Conflict

Clark explained that subsea cables offer greater bandwidth and reliability than satellites, which are vulnerable to jamming during crises.

“If you’ve got a data centre on Christmas, you can do a lot of that through cloud infrastructure,” he added.

Google has already applied for environmental approvals to build the first subsea cable connecting Christmas Island to Darwin, where US Marines are regularly stationed. US company SubCom, which previously connected the Diego Garcia military base, will handle the installation.

This infrastructure would create a resilient network for and command operations, solidifying the island’s role in Indo-Pacific defence strategy.
