Kerala Becomes First Indian State Free From Extreme Poverty

Kerala has achieved a historic milestone by becoming India’s first state to eliminate extreme poverty, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced during a special assembly session marking Kerala Piravi, the state’s formation day.

Key Highlights

  • Kerala declared first Indian state free from extreme poverty
  • Congress-led UDF opposition boycotted the special session, calling declaration a “sham”
  • Government spent over ₹1,000 crore on poverty eradication programs
  • Multiple welfare schemes benefited millions of families across the state

Opposition Walkout and Government Response

The Congress-led UDF opposition boycotted the special session, with Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan describing the Chief Minister’s statement as “pure fraud” and in “contempt” of House rules.

“We cannot join in that and are completely boycotting the session,” Satheesan declared before UDF members walked out shouting “fraudulent” and “shameful.”

“We only say what we can implement, and we have implemented what we said. That is our reply to the opposition leader,” Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan responded.

Comprehensive Welfare Initiatives

The government’s multi-pronged approach included substantial investments in social welfare programs:

  • Welfare pension to 62 lakh families
  • Houses provided to 4.7 lakh families
  • Approximately 6,000 public health facilities established
  • Expansion of family health centres
  • Free health insurance to 43 lakh families
  • Land distributed to four lakh families

These initiatives significantly reduced both the extent and intensity of extreme poverty across Kerala.

Sustaining the Achievement

While celebrating this achievement, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for continued vigilance to maintain the progress. The government has prepared a comprehensive blueprint for ongoing activities and outcome monitoring.

“The government will make vigilant interventions with people’s participation to raise the living standards of those who have been rid of extreme poverty and also to ensure social justice and equity for them,” Vijayan stated.

This milestone represents a significant step in the LDF government’s vision of building a ‘Nava Keralam’ (New Kerala) and sets a model for other states to follow in poverty eradication efforts.
