64 Killed in Massive Rio Police Raid Targeting Red Command Gang

Massive Rio Police Raid Leaves 64 Dead in Major Gang Crackdown

A massive security operation in Rio de Janeiro has resulted in at least 64 fatalities, including four police officers, marking one of Brazil’s deadliest police raids in recent years.

Key Takeaways

  • At least 64 killed, including 4 police officers
  • Over 2,500 personnel involved in year-long planned operation
  • 81 arrests made, 42 rifles seized from Comando Vermelho gang
  • Gang used drones to attack police during the raid

Operation Details and Scale

The raid targeted the Comando Vermelho (Red Command) criminal organization’s territorial expansion in several gang-controlled neighborhoods. Authorities had planned the operation for over a year, deploying more than 2,500 military and civilian police personnel in what officials described as one of the biggest anti-crime drives in recent memory.

Arrests and Weapons Seized

Security forces arrested at least 81 suspects during the crackdown and confiscated 42 rifles from the gang. Officials warned that casualty numbers could rise as the operation continues.

Drone Attacks and Gang Retaliation

In a concerning escalation, gang members used drones to attack police officers in the Penha Complex. The state government shared footage on X showing a drone firing projectiles at security forces. Despite these attacks, officials confirmed that security forces “remain steadfast in the fight against crime.”

Governor’s Response

Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “This is the magnitude of the challenge we face.” He characterized the gang’s activities as “no longer a common crime; it is narco-terrorism,” using terminology popular among tough-on-crime leaders in the Americas.

About Comando Vermelho

The Comando Vermelho, founded during Brazil’s military dictatorship in the 1970s, represents the country’s oldest and most influential criminal organization. Originally established as a leftist prisoners’ group, it has transformed into a transnational syndicate deeply involved in drug trafficking and extortion, frequently clashing with rival gangs and security forces.
