Reliance and Meta Launch $100 Million AI Joint Venture in India

Reliance and Meta Formalise $100 Million AI Joint Venture

Reliance Industries has officially established its artificial intelligence partnership with Meta Platforms through a new joint venture company called Reliance Enterprise Intelligence (REIL). The entity, incorporated on October 24, will develop and distribute enterprise AI services across India.

Key Investment Details

  • Total initial investment: ₹855 crore (~$100 million)
  • Reliance holds 70% stake via its AI subsidiary Reliance Intelligence
  • Meta’s Facebook Overseas holds remaining 30% stake
  • Initial capital of ₹2 crore invested for incorporation

Strategic Focus and Technology

The joint venture will build agentic enterprise AI platforms using Meta’s open-source large language model, Llama. The goal is to deliver sovereign AI solutions with local hosting and transparent operations.

“Llama has shown how AI can amplify human potential, boost productivity, and accelerate innovation. RIL’s reach and scale can bring the benefits of AI across India,” said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg during Reliance’s August AGM.

Broader AI Strategy

The formalisation follows Mukesh Ambani’s announcement of Reliance Intelligence at the company’s AGM, where he outlined a comprehensive AI strategy focusing on:

  • Infrastructure development
  • Global partnerships
  • Service delivery systems
  • Talent development

Reliance plans to build gigawatt-scale, AI-ready data centers in Jamnagar powered by green energy. The company is also partnering with Google to establish a dedicated cloud region in Jamnagar.

“The collaboration will help transform Reliance’s businesses from energy and retail to telecom and financial services through AI,” said Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.

The company confirmed no regulatory approvals were required for the joint venture’s incorporation.
