Meta Cuts 600 AI Roles in Superintelligence Labs Restructuring

Key Takeaways

  • Meta is eliminating approximately 600 roles within its Superintelligence Labs AI division.
  • The layoffs impact FAIR, product-related AI, and AI infrastructure teams.
  • This follows a major June reorganization of Meta’s AI efforts.

Meta is cutting roughly 600 positions from its Superintelligence Labs artificial intelligence unit, according to an Axios report. The job reductions were announced on Wednesday.

The layoffs will affect the Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) unit, along with product-related AI and AI infrastructure teams. The newly formed TBD Lab will be spared from these cuts.

Meta has not officially commented on the report. Reuters noted it could not independently verify the information.

Background and Reorganization

The parent company of Facebook and Instagram reorganized its AI operations under Superintelligence Labs in June. This move came after several senior staff departures and a disappointing reception for its open-source Llama 4 model.

In July, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Meta would invest hundreds of billions of dollars to construct multiple massive AI data centers for its Superintelligence initiative.

Meta’s significant investment in AI began in 2013 with the launch of FAIR. The company recruited Yann LeCun, its chief AI scientist, to lead these efforts and build a global research network focused on deep learning.
