Union Minister Tests India’s Own Navigation App Mappls
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has tested and endorsed ‘Mappls’, a homegrown navigation app developed by MapmyIndia, as part of India’s push for indigenous technology solutions.
Key Features Highlighted
In a social media post, Minister Vaishnaw praised the app saying, “Good features — must try!” He specifically highlighted:
- 3D overview for underpasses and overbridges
- Multi-floor navigation for complex buildings like malls and hospitals
- Junction view and live traffic signal timers
- Regional language support
- Data stored entirely in India
Challenging Google Maps
Mappls aims to compete with Google Maps by addressing location accuracy issues in remote areas and improving regional language support. The app joins other Indian apps like Zoho Mail and Arattai in the “Har Ghar Swadeshi” movement.
Future Developments
MapmyIndia is expanding its digital address database and exploring railway integration through a potential MoU with Indian Railways. The company has also partnered with India Post to create India’s first comprehensive digital address system using DIGIPIN technology.
According to MapmyIndia co-founder Rakesh Verma, this partnership will bring digital addressing to the Mappls platform.
