Trinamool worker shot while returning home, party blames BJP

A Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker was shot while returning home after completing party work in poll-bound South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

According to reports, the survivor was riding his motorcycle home when miscreants suddenly opened fire at him, and a bullet hit his right thigh.

He collapsed on the roadside, after which local residents rescued him and rushed him to Canning Sub-Divisional Hospital for treatment. After preliminary treatment there, he was later shifted to Kolkata’s Chittaranjan National Medical College and Hospital for further care.

The incident took place around 11 pm on Sunday at Bhupendrapur in Shambhunagar Gram Panchayat of Gosaba. The injured has been identified as Dibyendu Gayen.

TMC leaders have accused the BJP of being behind the attack. However, there has been no response from the BJP so far. Police have started an investigation to determine who was involved in the incident. The situation in the area remains tense following the incident.

According to police and local sources, Dibyendu is an active TMC worker. A political meeting in support of TMC candidate Subrata Mondal is scheduled in Gosaba on April 22. Dibyendu had attended a meeting with party leaders and workers on Sunday evening regarding that event.

He was shot while returning from that meeting. Police are investigating the exact motive behind the attack.

Voting in South 24 Parganas will be held in the second phase on April 29, when 142 constituencies in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly will go to polls. The first phase of voting will be held on April 23.
