After days of rising temperatures, relief from the intense March heat may be on the way for large parts of northern and central India.
Weather systems expected to develop over the weekend are likely to trigger widespread rain, thunderstorms and hailstorms, potentially bringing down temperatures by several degrees.
According to the India Meteorological Department, an approaching western disturbance combined with a wind discontinuity over eastern India is expected to trigger unstable weather conditions across several northern states.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds and hail are likely to affect Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh starting Sunday, while snowfall is expected in the Himalayan region.
The weather activity is forecast to reduce day temperatures by around 3-4°C over the weekend and early next week, bringing temporary relief from unusually high temperatures recorded in many cities.
Recent weather observations show that maximum temperatures in several north Indian cities have been trending above 35°C, which is significantly higher than the typical values for early March. With the arrival of rain-bearing systems, temperatures could fall to a more seasonal range between 24°C and 28°C in many areas.
The western Himalayan region is expected to receive snowfall and rain as the weather system moves across the mountains. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-50 kmph are also likely over parts of the plains of northwest India.
Meteorologists say this change in weather marks a possible comeback of spring-like conditions in the second half of March after an early surge of heat across large parts of the country.
However, while the rainfall may bring relief from heat, it could pose risks to agriculture. Experts warn that thunderstorms and hailstorms may damage standing wheat crops across parts of north and central India, where harvesting season is approaching.
Farmers in states such as Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are particularly vulnerable, as strong winds and hail can flatten crops and reduce yields.
Another significant spell of thunderstorms is expected between March 18 and March 22 across north, east and central India. This second round of weather activity could lead to a further drop in temperatures and continued unsettled weather conditions.
Meteorologists say the combination of western disturbances and moisture flow from eastern India will play a key role in shaping the upcoming weather pattern.
While the rain may ease the unusual March heat, authorities are advising farmers and residents to stay alert for thunderstorms, gusty winds and possible hailstorms in the coming days.
