In an expected turn of events, Lucknow residents witnessed a dramatic shift in the weather as dark grey clouds blanketed the city skies on Monday.
A video of the eerie event shared on social media showed bustling traffic moving under ominous, overcast conditions, with wet roads glistening and vehicles navigating through the darkness.
What started as a typical hot May day quickly transformed into anything but, catching many off guard.
FROM EXTREME HEAT TO SHOWERS
Just days ago, Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, was reeling from intense summer heat.
Temperatures often hovered in the high 30s to low 40s°C, with heatwave conditions prevailing in many parts of the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier warned of above-normal heat in pockets of northwest and central India, but also forecasted above-normal rainfall for May 2026 overall, promising some cooler relief across the country.
This shift comes as a western disturbance and associated thunderstorm activity moved across northwest and central India.
IMD bulletins from early May predicted isolated to scattered thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30–60 kmph over Uttar Pradesh from May 3–7.
On May 3, gusty winds and thunderstorms were already reported in parts of the state, setting the stage for this change.
A SUDDEN CHANGE
The sudden downpour and dark clouds turned city roads slippery, slowing down traffic and affecting the daily commute.
Auto-rickshaws, cars, and bikes carefully made their way past landmarks, while the heavy moisture in the air brought a welcome drop in temperatures.
Many commuters expressed their struggle with reaching their offices on time, with rain making journeys tricky.
Similar weather ripples were felt in nearby Delhi-NCR, highlighting the widespread impact of this system.
IMD’s monthly outlook for May 2026 points to above-normal rainfall of over 110% of the long-period average, which is helping keep maximum temperatures normal to below-normal in many regions.
However, warmer nights and isolated heatwaves remain possible elsewhere.
For people in Lucknow, the rain has brought a much-needed respite from the sweltering heat that dominated late April and early May.
Locals are advised to stay updated with IMD alerts for thunderstorms and gusty winds.
While the dark clouds painted a moody picture, they also signalled the arrival of pre-monsoon activity, offering a breather before summer intensifies again.
