Delhi to hit 36 degrees on Monday, Himachal Pradesh on heat wave alert

India is set for a day of contrasting weather on Monday, March 9, 2026. While Delhi is expected to touch 36 degrees Celsius and heat wave warnings remain active across several states, Jammu and Kashmir is bracing for rain and snow as a fresh Western Disturbance arrives.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a wide set of alerts for the day.

WHY WILL IT BE SO HOT IN DELHI ON MONDAY?

Delhi will see a partly cloudy sky on Monday with maximum temperatures likely between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius, which is appreciably above normal for early March.

Minimum temperatures will range between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. Across the wider northwest India region, day temperatures are running three to five degrees Celsius above normal over the plains, and five to eight degrees above normal over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

IMD expects this unusual warmth to persist through March 10 before temperatures begin to ease by two to three degrees Celsius from around March 11.

FOR WHICH PLACES HAVE HEAT WAVE WARNINGS BEEN ISSUED?

Himachal Pradesh is under a heat wave to severe heat wave warning for Monday, a rare occurrence for a hill state in early March. Vidarbha in Maharashtra remains under a heat wave alert through March 12.

West Rajasthan, Saurashtra and Kutch are also under heat wave warnings through March 10, with North Gujarat joining the list on Monday and Tuesday. Hot and humid conditions are additionally expected along parts of coastal Gujarat on Monday and Tuesday.

WILL IT SNOW IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR ON MONDAY?

A fresh Western Disturbance is arriving over the Western Himalayan region on Monday, bringing isolated light rainfall and snowfall to Jammu and Kashmir. Thunderstorms and gusty winds of 30 to 50 kilometres per hour are likely over the valley on Monday and Tuesday.

The intensity is expected to pick up between March 10 and 12, when scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rain and snow are forecast before gradually tapering off by March 13 and 14.
