Boong trailer: Young boy’s journey of hope amid conflict anchors BAFTA winner

The trailer of Boong, the first Indian film to win a BAFTA in the Best Children’s and Family Film category, was unveiled on Wednesday. The Manipuri-language film is written and directed by Lakshmipriya Devi.

Following its historic recognition at the 79th British Academy Film Awards, the film is set to released in theatres on March 6, 2026.

At the BAFTAs this year, Boong emerged victorious over international titles such as Arco, Lilo & Stitch and Zootopia 2. The win marked a significant milestone for Indian cinema, making it the first Indian production to secure the award in this category.

The film centres on Boong, a schoolboy from a village in Manipur, portrayed by Gugun Kipgen. The story follows his journey to find his father, who has been away from home for a prolonged period and is believed to be working near the Manipur-Myanmar border.

Hoping to surprise his mother, Boong decides to bring his father back home. Accompanied by his two friends, he travels to Moreh, a town close to the Myanmar border, where they encounter various challenges along the way.

The character of Raju, Boong’s best friend, is played by Angom Sanamatum. Set against the backdrop of socio-political tensions in Northeast India, the narrative explores themes of resilience, hope and the enduring strength of family bonds.

As suggested in the trailer, Boong believes that reuniting his family would be the ultimate act of love and kindness. While rooted in the realities of a specific region, the film presents a universally relatable story about childhood innocence and determination.

With its theatrical re-release scheduled for March 6, Boong is expected to attract renewed attention, building on the global recognition it received at the BAFTAs. The film is backed by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment along with Chalkboard Entertainment and Suitable Pictures.
