Israel-US strike on Iran: How Dubai’s worst nightmare unfolded

Dubai saw one of its worst days in decades after it was caught in crossfire between Iran and joint US-Israel forces following Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s death.

Fresh blasts were heard across the Gulf city as defence systems repelled Iranian missiles and drones over its famous skyscrapers.

According to AFP, thick black smoke rose on the clear morning horizon in the south of the city as Iranian strikes targeted military bases and civilian infrastructure across the Gulf.

Local authorities said four people were injured in a fire at Palm Jumeirah, the man-made island known for its luxury hotels and resorts. A high-end hotel was hit by parts of a missile that was either intercepted or knocked off its trajectory.

Dubai’s main airport, the world’s busiest aviation hub, was partially damaged by a suspected aerial strike on one of its terminal buildings. The airport operator said the facility sustained “minor damage” that was quickly contained.

The attacks fractured the emirate’s long-held image of a haven in a tough neighbourhood. Dubai has prided itself on its unshakable security and safety.

Passengers rushed to evacuate Dubai International Airport after a reported Iranian strike overnight.

Videos showed panicked travellers running through concourses as smoke spread inside parts of the terminal. Aviation sources told Reuters that an overnight Iranian attack damaged one of the terminals.

Dubai Airports later said a concourse sustained “minor damage” and that emergency response teams were immediately deployed. All flights in and out of the city’s two main airports were suspended until further notice.

“Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport at this time and to contact their respective airlines directly for the latest updates,” the Dubai Media Office said.

Dubai’s iconic Burj Al Arab caught fire after a drone was intercepted and debris caused a minor blaze on its outer facade.

“Authorities confirm that a drone was intercepted, and debris caused a minor fire on the Burj Al Arab’s outer facade. Civil Defence teams responded immediately and brought the incident under control. No injuries have been reported,” the Dubai Media Office said.

A video released by Iran’s state-linked Fars News Agency showed a plume of smoke rising from an area near the Burj Khalifa, though the exact location of the explosion remains unclear.

BBC-verified footage also showed flames engulfing Fairmont The Palm, with thick smoke rising above Palm Jumeirah. Authorities said four people were injured and the blaze was later contained.

Social media showed interceptors and objects flying across the sky — an unusual scene in the emirate. A restaurant in the Dubai International Financial Centre asked customers to pay and leave so it could close early.

Panic buying in some supermarkets prompted authorities to reassure residents that supplies remain adequate. Strategic reserves of essential commodities are “robust, comprehensive and diversified,” officials said, urging people not to stockpile.
