Key Takeaways

  • Anthony Albanese becomes first Australian PM to marry while in office
  • Private ceremony held at The Lodge in Canberra with family and close friends
  • Couple exchanged vows after engagement on Valentine’s Day 2023

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has made history by becoming the first sitting PM to marry while in office. He tied the knot with partner Jodie Haydon in a private ceremony at The Lodge in Canberra on Saturday.

The intimate wedding was attended by family and close friends, with details kept confidential until the official announcement. The couple had been engaged since Valentine’s Day last year.

Ceremony Details and Fashion

In a statement from the Prime Minister’s office, Albanese expressed their joy: “We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends.”

Haydon wore a custom dress by Sydney designer “Romance Was Born,” while the Prime Minister chose a suit from Australian brand MJ Bale. The wedding party included Haydon’s five-year-old niece Ella as flower girl and Albanese’s dog Toto as ring bearer.

Celebration and Honeymoon Plans

Guests enjoyed specially crafted beer from Sydney’s Willie the Boatman brewery. The couple exited to Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)” and shared their first dance to Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight.”

The newlyweds will honeymoon within Australia from Monday to Friday, with all expenses privately funded. Haydon has been a constant presence in Albanese’s political life, supporting him through the 2022 election campaign and this year’s Labor victory.
