Thailand waives overstay fines for travellers hit by Middle East flight disruptions

Thailand’s Immigration Bureau has introduced urgent relief measures for foreign nationals who have been unable to leave the country due to travel disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

In an announcement issued on March 4, 2026, authorities said the measures apply to foreign nationals whose permission to stay in Thailand expired on or after February 28, 2026, and who have been unable to depart due to airspace closures and flight cancellations linked to the regional crisis.

The bureau said airspace restrictions across parts of the Middle East have led to widespread flight disruptions, leaving some travellers stranded in Thailand and unable to leave before their visas or permitted stay expired.

Overstay fines waived for departing travellers

Under the new measures, foreign nationals who have overstayed due to the disruptions and wish to leave Thailand will not have to pay overstay fines.

Immigration authorities confirmed that no penalties will be imposed for travellers whose stay expired after February 28 but who were unable to depart due to the situation.

The waiver is intended to ease the burden on travellers affected by circumstances beyond their control while ensuring compliance with immigration regulations.

Temporary stay extensions also possible

Foreign nationals who are unable to leave Thailand immediately may also apply for a temporary stay extension.

In such cases, immigration officers may consider granting an extension of up to 30 days per permission, according to the bureau. Applicants seeking this option will first need to complete the standard fine settlement process required under Thai immigration law before the extension is considered.

Documents required for extension

Travellers applying for a temporary stay must submit the following documents:

Application form (TM.7)

Copy of passport or travel document

A letter from an embassy or consulate explaining the necessity for the extension

If such a letter cannot be provided, immigration officers may instead record a statement explaining the reason for the request according to prescribed procedures.

Applicants may also need to complete additional forms, including STM.2, STM.2/1, and STM.9.

Measures remain until situation stabilises

Thailand’s Immigration Bureau said the special measures will remain in effect until the travel situation returns to normal or until authorities issue an official order amending or withdrawing the policy.

Travellers are advised to monitor updates on the Immigration Bureau’s official website for further announcements and guidance as the situation evolves.
