Delhi Airport issues travel advisory; warns of possible delays on Westbound flights: What travellers should know

In a recent update, Delhi Airport has issued a fresh travel advisory amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The international air travel out of India is beginning to feel the ripple effects. Indira Gandhi International Airport at Delhi has warned of possible disruptions to westbound international flights, urging travellers to stay informed and plan ahead.

Passenger Advisory issued at 11:00 hrs, released by Delhi International Airport authorities, mentions,

“Due to the ongoing political developments in the Middle East, westbound international flights may face delays or schedule adjustments. Passengers are strongly encouraged to contact their respective airlines for the latest flight information before heading to the airport. For real-time updates, please visit our official website: www.newdelhiairport.in

We sincerely appreciate your patience and cooperation during this period.

Please rely solely on official communication channels for verified information and updates regarding the situation.”

Given the current situation, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in India, has also issued advisories asking airlines to avoid up to 11 Middle Eastern airspaces. These countries are Iran, Israel, Lebanon, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait and Qatar.

Westbound international flights from Delhi — particularly those headed towards the Middle East, Europe, the United Kingdom and North America, mostly depend on air corridors that pass over or near West Asian airspace. Because several parts of the region are facing instability, most of the airlines are being forced to reassess their paths.

In the aviation sector, even a simple airspace restriction can have significant consequences, including longer routes, increased fuel requirements and crew duty-time, among other challenges. These can ultimately result in delayed departures, chaotic situations, revised schedules or, in certain cases, last-minute cancellations, depending on several things. The advisory mostly reflects this operational uncertainty, rather than a single event.

As per reports, airspace has been widely affected/closed/restricted in the nations such as Iran, Israel, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq and parts of the UAE. These countries have temporarily shut their skies which has disrupted air routes used regularly by flights.

Westbound international flights may face delays or schedule changes and that real-time updates are available on the airport’s official website. Meanwhile passengers are requested to cooperate. Though the advisory does not state that all flights are cancelled. It urges preparedness and awareness.

As of March 1, 2026, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has seen cancellations across several routes. As per latest reports, at least 27 flights were cancelled at IGIA on March 1.

For travellers, this means longer flight durations, altered routes, changed departure/arrival timings, and in the worst case scenario, cancellation.

Avoid travel, if not urgent

Check flight status before leaving home

Even if your flight appears on schedule, conditions are likely to change.

Always confirm your flight status directly with your airline.

Stay flexible with travel plans

Understand rebooking and refund options

Most airlines offer flexible policies during such times. If your flight is delayed or cancelled due to operational reasons, you may be eligible for rebooking, refunds or credit. Check with your airline.

For now, travellers are encouraged to remain alert, patient and flexible.
