Smartphones have become indispensable, handling everything from keeping in touch with family and friends to streaming music and videos. Yet, for some time, the devices themselves have not seen major changes. Now, artificial intelligence is starting to influence how phones are used, and even how apps are created.
Samsung has hinted at one possibility with what it calls “vibe coding.” The idea is still in the early stages, but it could allow users to modify existing apps or create small personalised functions according to their needs. Speaking to TechRadar, the company said, “Something we’re looking into.” Won-Joon Choi, head of Samsung’s Mobile eXperience (MX) business, added, “Right now we’re limited to premade tools, but with vibe coding, users could adjust their favourite apps or make something customised to their needs.”
Samsung has not started testing the feature on its One UI interface, but the concept shows the company is considering ways for users to have more control over their phone experience. Over the years, Samsung has carefully improved its Android-based software, adding useful features without overwhelming users, and vibe coding could extend that approach by letting people personalise apps to their liking.
Meanwhile, AI-powered app creation is already happening. Startups like Nothing introduced Playground in September 2025, a platform that allows users to create widgets or customise apps using simple text prompts. People can build tools like flight trackers, meeting briefs, or virtual pets, while more advanced users can modify the underlying code for more control. However, full-scale apps are not yet possible on Playground, showing that the technology is still developing.
Other companies are also making AI-assisted coding tools more accessible. OpenAI’s Codex and Anthropic’s Claude Agent let developers (and even non-developers) create apps quickly. A journalist at 9To5Mac reported that Codex built a working Mac app in just 15 minutes, solving a specific productivity need that other apps could not. While most casual users are not yet aware of these tools, they show that people could soon personalise apps on their own without learning complex coding.
These developments suggest a future where smartphones may no longer be limited to pre-made apps. Users could start designing and adjusting apps to suit their needs, giving them more control over how their devices work. For Samsung and other brands, the challenge will be to make these tools easy to use while keeping the experience simple and practical. Done right, vibe coding could let users shape their devices to fit their individual needs.
