No job is safe, Uber CEO says his engineers made his AI clone

Artificial intelligence (AI) might take your job – this is something most of us have been hearing for weeks now. However, it seems that even top executives may not be spared from this AI takeover. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has revealed that engineers within the company have already created his own AI clone.

During an episode of The Diary of a CEO podcast, Khosrowshahi explained how he got to know about his AI clone, endearingly named, Dara AI. Though instead of this clone being designed to replace the Uber boss entirely, teams seemingly use to it to practice.

Dara said, “They basically make the presentation to the Dara AI as a prep for making a presentation to me.”

Uber CEO says we are all replaceable

While on the surface, Dara AI may seem like a harmless experiment that Uber teams just use to prepare for meetings with their actual boss, it does raise questions on whether AI can even replace executives in the future. When Dara Khosrowshahi was asked about such a possibility, he replied, “When the models can learn in real-time, that is the point at which I’m going to think that, yeah, we are all replaceable.”

Similar discussions have taken place in the past. During the India AI Impact Summit, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that AI may be “capable of doing a better job” as a CEO than any executive. Last year, Google chief Sundar Pichai claimed that the role of a CEO could be one of the easier jobs for AI in the future.

What about other jobs?

Uber now relies heavily on the use of AI when it comes to running its core ride-hailing business. The company has also launched new ventures such as the AI Solutions division, which pays independent contractors to help train AI for external clients.

According to Khosrowshahi, the adoption of AI could affect hiring decisions and team structure. Dara stated that he’d want to “hire more engineers” if AI makes Uber’s engineers 25 per cent more efficient. However, there is also a limit here.

The Uber boss stated that in the future instead of hiring engineers, he may be more interested in buying GPUs. Dara stated, “At that point, instead of adding an engineer, I should add agents and buy some more GPUs from Nvidia.”
