India Launches E-Passport: Fees, Eligibility and Security Features

India Launches E-Passport with Enhanced Security Features

The Government of India has introduced e-passports equipped with advanced security technology, with over 8 million already issued domestically and 62,000 through Indian missions abroad. The new passports feature contactless RFID chips storing biometric data to prevent forgery and streamline international travel.

Key Takeaways

  • E-passports feature embedded RFID chips with biometric data
  • Over 8 million issued in India, 62,000 overseas
  • Regular fee: ₹1,500 (36-page), ₹2,000 (60-page)
  • Available at select Passport Seva Kendras nationwide

What is an E-Passport?

An e-passport maintains the traditional format but includes an electronic chip in the back cover that securely stores the holder’s personal information and biometric data. This includes fingerprints, facial recognition data, and digital signatures.

The technology verifies that printed information matches chip data, making forgery extremely difficult. E-passports display a distinctive gold symbol on the cover for easy identification at airports and border checkpoints, enabling faster scanning and reduced waiting times.

E-Passport Application Fees

The standard application fee for a new e-passport is ₹1,500 for a 36-page booklet and ₹2,000 for a 60-page version. Tatkal (expedited) fees are additional to these amounts.

This represents an upgraded version of the standard passport designed to enhance security, improve transparency, and streamline international border crossings.

Eligibility and Application Process

Any Indian citizen eligible for a regular passport can apply for an e-passport. Currently available at limited Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs), applicants should verify availability at their local passport office before applying.

The government plans to gradually expand the service nationwide, ensuring both new applicants and those renewing passports can access the upgraded security features.
