Inside Rory McIlroy’s love life: Engagement with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, marriage to Erica Stoll and patch up after divorce filing

Rory McIlroy is one of golf’s biggest names and his private life has often been part of the public story. The broad outline is simple: early high-profile relationships, a well-known engagement that ended, a long-term partnership that led to marriage and a child, and a very public wobble in 2024 that the couple ultimately put behind them. For fans, that arc has been as compelling as any leaderboard drama. McIlroy first hit the headlines off the course with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. They began dating in 2011, and McIlroy proposed on New Year’s Eve in 2013. The engagement was widely covered, but the couple split in 2014 before the wedding. McIlroy later said he was not ready for marriage at that point. The split closed a chapter that had been intensely scrutinised and left him to refocus on his career.

Balancing fame, setbacks and family life away from spotlight

After several years, McIlroy met Erica Stoll, an events manager for the PGA of America, at a tournament in 2012. Their relationship grew quietly compared with his earlier public romance. They dated for several years and married in April 2017 at Ashford Castle in Ireland in a ceremony described as private and elegant. The wedding marked a new, more settled phase in McIlroy’s life.

Family life followed. The couple welcomed daughter Poppy Kennedy McIlroy in August 2020.

Poppy quickly became a fan favorite, including a memorable moment at the Masters when she drained a long putt during the Par 3 contest. He and Erica have often spoken about prioritising family even as his playing schedule demands travel and training.

The balance was tested in 2024. Reports were rife that McIlroy filed for divorce in May, citing a breakdown in their relationship. The news surprised many and got a lot of media attention. But, within weeks, the couple reconciled and dismissed the divorce filing. McIlroy later said they sorted out their problems privately and chose to stay together for their family. They kept the reconciliation away from the spotlight, though it was later shown in the Netflix series Full Swing, which delved into the personal pressure top athletes often deal with.

In 2025 the family announced a move from Florida back to the United Kingdom, a decision McIlroy described as aimed at giving Poppy a closer connection to his roots. Through the highs of big wins and the lows of tough losses, along with constant travel and becoming parents, McIlroy and Erica have tried to keep most of their personal life private. They share important milestones, but they protect the rest.

McIlroy has had very public relationships, a broken engagement, and later built a marriage while living under constant scrutiny. Today, the focus is mostly back on his golf.
