Rain brings relief across India, but hailstorms loom for the east on Monday

A pleasant Sunday across northwest India due to downpour brought much-needed relief from abnormal heat, as temperatures dropped by three to seven degrees Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and weather experts have issued alerts for continuing pre-monsoon activity and a fresh Western Disturbance on the horizon.

WILL THE RAIN CONTINUE IN DELHI?

The national capital and its surrounding regions, including Noida and Gurugram, witnessed widespread rain on Sunday morning.

According to the IMD, Delhi will likely see a partly cloudy sky with strong surface winds between 20 and 30 kilometres per hour, on Monday, March 16.

Devendra Tripathi, founder of Mausam Tak and weather vlogger for Kisan Tak, noted that the chances of rain or pre-monsoon activities will be less pronounced on Monday compared to Sunday.

He also said that while rain might decrease, the Tarai regions of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh could still see some action.

IS A HAILSTORM EXPECTED IN EAST INDIA?

East and central India are bracing for peak intensity of rain. The IMD has issued warnings for thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds reaching 50 to 60 kilometres per hour, gusting up to 70 kilometres per hour, along with hailstorms over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand on Monday.

Devendra Tripathi highlighted a broad “chance of pre-monsoon activities in Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.”

Independent weather expert Navdeep Dahiya also cautioned that wind speeds up to 50 kilometres per hour and isolated hailstorms could damage standing rabi crops in rural areas.

Looking ahead, a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to affect northwest India from the night of Tuesday, March 17, likely bringing another spell of rain and storms from Wednesday, March 18.
