New app to allow fishermen to track fish, weather, cyclone alerts

Scientists and fishermen came together on Tuesday at the fourth World Ocean Science Congress in Panaji to understand the use of Machli, a marine advisory app. The platform helps fishermen track the exact location of shoals of fish, making fishing more accurate in times of climate change, where the outcome is increasingly becoming uncertain. The app also helps fishermen monitor weather patterns and access emergency services from their mobile phones.

Developed by a Mumbai-based private foundation using data such as sea surface temperature and oceanographic conditions from the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad, the app integrates satellite-based marine intelligence with a simplified, multilingual interface designed specifically for India’s coastal communities.

“The potential fishing zone (PFZ) feature helps fishermen identify areas where fish are likely to be found,” said S Senthilkumaran, head, platforms and applications at the private foundation.

Every fish species responds to particular sea temperatures and conditions. Based on these parameters, INCOIS identifies zones where fish are likely to aggregate. The information is extracted through their API and presented in a simplified form for fishermen.

The PFZ feature covers 3 distances — 20 km, 50 km and 100 km — allowing fishermen to plan their trips based on their vessel capacity and fuel considerations. While the current version identifies fishing zones, developers say they are working on adding species-specific information in future updates.

The app also provides real-time and forecast data on weather conditions, wind speed, wave height, sea currents and cyclone alerts.

By enabling GPS location services, fishermen can access hyperlocal forecasts for their exact departure point and intended fishing route. This feature is critical, particularly during sudden weather changes. An SOS emergency contact function is also built into the app, allowing users to quickly reach assistance services if needed.

Recognising connectivity challenges at sea, the app allows users to download PFZ data while in network coverage and access it later offline.

The app is free to use and currently available in 10 official Indian languages. Developers noted that while several marine advisory apps exist, many are either paid services or limited in language accessibility. However, Konkani is not yet included.

In addition to marine advisories, the app provides state-wise information on govt schemes for fishermen. A built-in helpline and feedback system enables users to submit grievances or suggestions directly through the platform.
