Dry day at box office this Holi: Upcoming Dhurandhar 2 vs Toxic clash to blame?

There was a time when a Hindi film arriving on Holi carried expectation. Songs built around colour, splashy promotions, and the promise of a long weekend often translated into healthy footfalls.

This year, the festival comes with almost no major Hindi or South tentpole in sight. No big banner staking claims. No star-led spectacle betting on the holiday mood. The question feels unavoidable: has the industry quietly stepped back from Holi?

Trade analyst Ramesh Bala sees it less as withdrawal and more as prioritisation. “The studios operate in such a way, they tend to focus on the festival, but some festivals like Eid and Diwali are more important than Holi. If they can push some release during Holi, they’ll do it. If it doesn’t happen naturally, you know. I think this month, later this month, we are going to get Dhurandhar 2 from Hindi and Toxic from the south. So, I think Holi, the studios have given a miss to the Holi season this year,” he says.

In his reading, Holi hasn’t been dismissed. It has fallen behind bigger draws on the calendar.

Where does Holi stand now?

For decades, festival windows have been prime real estate. Sankranti and Pongal in January. Eid. Independence Day. Diwali. Christmas. Each brings built-in holidays and audience sentiment. Bala maintains that the fundamentals remain intact.

“No, still, I think the festival release period is an important period, whether you look at Sankranti Pongal during January, which gives multiple holidays, or Tamil New Year, or Independence Day weekend, or the Puja holidays in October, or Diwali, Christmas – festival releases are very important because that gives you holidays. Sometimes the holidays come during the weekend, so it gives a long weekend opening,” Bala explains.

If festive economics are still sound, why skip Holi this time?

Part of the answer may lie just a few days ahead.

The Dhurandhar-Toxic pull

Both Dhurandhar: The Revenge and Toxic are scheduled for March 19. For audiences, that means budgeting for two large-scale releases within the same stretch.

Bala explains the mindset: “People’s mindset is turning towards March 19, because during the battle of Dhurandhar and Toxic, most people will watch both movies, so they’ll be spending anywhere from Rs 1,000-Rs 2,000 for watching two movies, so it will be difficult for them to watch any other movie in March. Producers know it, so they’re just staying clear of it because there might not be interest among people to watch other movies. They’ll be saving money to watch Toxic.”

When viewers are already calculating spending for two event films, a third release in proximity may struggle to command attention. In that sense, the empty Holi weekend begins to look like strategic avoidance rather than oversight.

The February-March slowdown

There is also a seasonal pattern. January opens strong with Pongal and Republic Day. April gathers momentum again with Tamil New Year and summer releases. February and March often turn quieter, especially when board exams keep households busy.

The year adds further distractions: the T20 World Cup dominating the conversation, IPL on the horizon, and elections in multiple states. Each competes for time, money and mental space.

Bala acknowledges the impact. “Certainly (in) February, March the exams period, board exams, as you said. And right now, the T20 World Cup is going on. The IPL is coming up. Elections are coming up in five states. So those things certainly make an impact, and certainly I think the T20 World Cup would have played a role in not having a Holi release this year,” he says.

A missed slot?

Even so, leaving a holiday weekend unoccupied raises questions. A mid-budget film, perhaps? A romantic drama or a light comedy aimed at family audiences? Bala believes that space existed.

“Certainly a mid-budget movie, something like a love story, a romantic story with a tier 2 star would have been ideal, or a comedy or any movie would have been ideal. I think certainly every Friday there should be a good release and definitely at a festival there should be a good release. Already, the number of movies releasing in Hindi per Friday is slowly coming down. A lot of days are given free,” he emphasises.

The observation, therefore, points to a larger concern. The Hindi release pipeline has thinned. Fridays that used to carry multiple titles now pass quietly. The Holi gap may be part of that broader contraction.

Caution or calculation?

So has Holi lost its charm at the ticket window? Or is this simply a year when calendar maths, exam schedules, cricket tournaments and two headline releases aligned in a way that made restraint sensible? Studios appear to be concentrating firepower on fewer, bigger dates. Smaller windows are treated as optional. Risk appetite has narrowed, especially in Hindi cinema where theatrical margins remain under pressure.

Yet the optics matter. A festival weekend without a marquee release feels unusual in a country where cinema and celebration have long lived together.

It is possible that this is a one-off, or that March 19 has overshadowed everything else. Or perhaps the industry is slowly redrawing its festive map, ranking holidays by guaranteed return rather than sentiment. As India celebrates Holi today, guess the film industry may have to hold off on its own celebration until March 19!
