Charak trailer: Sudipto Sen film promises a haunting look at superstitious rituals

The trailer for director Shieladitya Moulik’s Charak: Fair of Faith has been released. It provides a haunting first look at what promises to be a folklore-driven thriller centred on occult, blind belief, and the perils of extreme ritualism. With The Kerala Story director Sudipto Sen backing the film as producer, it is reportedly about a gritty investigation into superstitions that remain deeply rooted in rural India.

Framed by the atmosphere of the Charak mela, a festival known for its deep religious fervour, the trailer depicts a local community getting ready for what is perceived as their final opportunity to see their long-standing prayers answered.

As the festival’s traditional rituals grow more extreme, the story takes a turn toward a much darker and more sinister atmosphere. What starts as a genuine expression of religious faith eventually transforms into an unsettling and frenzied state. The imagery portrays a setting where spiritual devotion is overtaken by obsession, highlighting the precarious gap between deep-seated belief and total ruin. Ultimately, the film aims to challenge the repercussions of radical fanaticism rather than attacking faith itself.

Charak: Fair of Faith has been denied Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) certification due to some objectionable sequences. Sen, in an earlier interview with India Today, had spoken about exploring the disconcerting experience of his film, and highlighted the need to have a clear demarcation between faith and blind faith.

He said, “As an artiste, I am very careful about bringing a story to the light without compromising on the cinematic values, and Charak is exactly that. It is a very important story because it shows you the difference, that thin line between faith, belief and your understanding and education. It shows you where to stop while filtering things through your faith and through science.”

The film is produced by Dhaval Jayantilal Gada and Sipping Tea Cinemas in association with Sudipto Sen Productions, with Rajesh Bhatt serving as associate producer. The film is based on a short story by Sanjay Halder, with script and dialogues by Farauq Malik.

Charak: Fair of Faith is set for a theatrical release on March 6, 2026.
