India’s Formal Job Growth Slows 20% in October: Indeed Report

India’s Formal Job Growth Slows 20% in October

India’s formal job market experienced a significant slowdown in October, with job postings declining by nearly 20% compared to the same period last year and 5.6% from September, according to the latest Indeed report.

Key Takeaways

  • Formal job postings dropped 20% year-on-year in October
  • Second consecutive month of decline with 5.6% monthly decrease
  • Banking, finance, and legal sectors saw the steepest declines
  • Cleaning, healthcare, and social services showed strong growth
  • Remote work opportunities increased significantly to 9.1% of postings

Sectoral Performance Shows Mixed Trends

The three-month trend revealed that nearly three-quarters of sectors posted declines, with banking and finance leading the downturn at -25.6%, followed by legal (-22.4%), retail (-16.7%), and loading and stocking (-15%).

“Every month, the Indian workforce is gradually moving toward more formal work arrangements. As this transition continues, job creation in the formal sector is expected to outpace overall employment growth,” said Callam Pickering, Indeed’s APAC Senior Economist.

Growth Sectors Defy Overall Slowdown

Despite the broader slowdown, several sectors demonstrated resilience with cleaning and sanitation posting impressive 20% growth. Community and social services increased by 17.4%, while dental (13.1%), nursing (11.2%), and food preparation and service (10.3%) also showed strong performance. Human resources postings edged up modestly by 2.3%.

Remote Work Opportunities Expand

The report highlighted a significant shift toward remote work arrangements, with 9.1% of October job postings explicitly mentioning work-from-home or remote options – a substantial 7.6 percentage point increase from the previous year.

IT infrastructure, operations and support led remote work adoption at 18.2%, followed by community and social services (15.1%) and industrial engineering (14%). While remote opportunities grew in IT infrastructure and installation/maintenance, veterinary and community services saw slight declines in remote postings.

“Changes in remote work arrangements reflect shifting employer attitudes and strategies to attract candidates,” Pickering added.
