India Set to Become World’s Largest Scotch Whisky Market

Key Takeaways

  • India is projected to become the world’s largest Scotch whisky market by both volume and value within a few years.
  • The country already leads globally in Scotch import volume, having brought in 192 million bottles in 2024.
  • Strategic partnerships between Scottish and Indian whisky producers are being explored to boost exports.

India is on a clear path to become the world’s largest market for Scotch whisky in both volume and value, according to Mark Kent CMG, Chief Executive of the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA). This growth is fueled by intense competition, rising demand for premium spirits, and India’s steady economic expansion.

Partnerships and Premium Growth

Kent highlighted the rapid rise of India’s single malt segment. The SWA is now exploring collaborations with Indian producers, aiming not just to introduce Indian whiskies to the UK but to jointly target global markets. He noted the recent international recognition for Indian single malts and plans to engage with the Indian Malt Whiskey Association to align on quality standards and mutual goals.

Calling it a “moment of opportunity,” Kent stated that Indian distillers could significantly boost their single malt exports to the UK and other countries through strategic alliances with Scottish counterparts.

Current Market Standing

India already holds the title of the largest Scotch whisky market by volume, importing 192 million bottles in 2024 and reclaiming the top spot from France. It also ranks among the top five markets by value. The United States remains the largest market by value at £971 million.

Despite global economic factors, Kent expressed strong confidence in India’s growing appreciation and knowledge of Scotch, indicating the market is well-positioned to lead in both volume and value soon.
