God of War creator rips Prime Video adaptation, calls first look terrible and dumb

Amazon Prime Video’s first look at its live-action God of War series has landed with a thud, and the franchise’s original creator has not held back. David Jaffe has torn into the newly released image, branding it “so dumb” and “terrible”, and bluntly declaring that “Kratos just looks stupid”.

The official still, which shows Ryan Hurst as Kratos supervising an archery lesson for Atreus in a forest, was meant to build anticipation. Instead, it has triggered fierce debate across the gaming community. Within hours of its release, fans began questioning whether the adaptation truly understands the spirit of the iconic PlayStation saga.

Why is the first look causing outrage?

God of War has already secured a two-season order from Amazon Prime Video, with Ronald D Moore serving as showrunner. Expectations are sky-high. The series promises to adapt the Norse-era storyline of the blockbuster games, following Kratos and his son Atreus through a mythological landscape fraught with danger.

However, many fans argue that the debut image lacks intensity and gravitas. The still presents a quieter father-son moment, but critics claim it strips away the raw power and mythic scale that define the games. For a character famed for Spartan rage and imposing presence, the restrained tone did not sit well with a section of the audience.

What exactly did David Jaffe say?

David Jaffe, who created the original God of War game, delivered one of the most scathing reactions. In the latest video of his YouTube channel David Jaffe, the creator dissected the promotional image, he said, “I’m sure everybody’s trying real hard, but it’s so dumb.”

He went further, describing the image as “so bad in so many ways”. According to Jaffe, introducing Kratos to a broader television audience through this still was a misstep. “If you are going to reveal to most people a brand-new character that you hope is going to carry your series for the first time this is the way you introduce them?” he asked.

Jaffe also mocked the composition of the image, joking that it looked unintentionally comedic. His blunt assessment has since fuelled wider online debate.

How did the cast respond?

Ryan Hurst, who plays Kratos, urged viewers not to judge the series based on a single photograph. He suggested that audiences should wait before forming opinions. That defence did little to calm critics.

Jaffe pushed back sharply at Hurst’s remarks, questioning why an official promotional image would be released if it was not meant to represent the show’s tone. His comments underscored a broader frustration: if this is the first impression, fans expect it to inspire confidence, not confusion.

What is the series actually about?

The adaptation will draw primarily from the two most recent God of War games, which reimagined Kratos in a Norse setting. The narrative centres on his attempt to guide his young son while confronting gods, monsters and his own violent past.

The show is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios and PlayStation Productions. With a heavyweight creative team and an established fanbase, the project remains one of Prime Video’s most anticipated game-to-screen ventures.

Yet the backlash over a single image proves just how protective fans are of the franchise. Whether the final series silences critics or amplifies concerns remains to be seen. For now, the first look has done one thing decisively: it has everyone talking.
