The Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell says his cancer is treatable but not curable

Bruce Campbell has revealed that he has been diagnosed with a form of cancer that is “treatable, not curable”. Sharing the news directly with fans in a social media statement, the 67-year-old actor said the diagnosis came as a shock and would require him to scale back professional commitments to focus on treatment.

Best known for playing Ash Williams in the cult horror franchise The Evil Dead, Campbell explained that he chose to speak publicly to prevent misinformation. “These days, when someone is having a health issue, it’s referred to as an ‘opportunity,’ so let’s go with that – I’m having one of those,” he wrote, adding that while the cancer is manageable, it is not curable.

What exactly did Bruce Campbell say?

Campbell addressed fans in his trademark blunt tone. He admitted the diagnosis surprised him and confirmed that treatment would take priority over work for the foreseeable future.

“The good news is, I’m not gonna go into any more detail,” he wrote, clarifying that he would keep specifics about the illness private. However, he stressed that upcoming appearances, conventions and certain projects would need to “take a back seat to treatment,” he said.

He also made it clear he was not seeking sympathy. Instead, he wanted to stay ahead of rumours. “Fear not, I am a tough old son-of-a-b**** and I have great support, so I expect to be around a while,” he assured fans.

How will this affect his upcoming projects?

The announcement means Campbell will cancel several fan conventions this summer. He expressed regret over the decision, acknowledging how much he values meeting audiences in person.

His immediate goal is to focus on treatment over the summer months so that he can tour in the autumn with his new film, Ernie & Emma. While his on-screen work may slow temporarily, he remains professionally active.

Campbell is currently serving as executive producer on the forthcoming horror film, Evil Dead Burn, scheduled for release on July 24, 2026. Another film, Highly Functional, is in post-production, signalling that his creative output continues despite the health setback.

Why is Bruce Campbell such a cult icon?

Campbell’s legacy in genre cinema stretches back more than four decades. His portrayal of chainsaw-wielding anti-hero Ash Williams in The Evil Dead and its sequel Evil Dead II turned him into a horror legend.

Directed by Sam Raimi, the original Evil Dead became a defining film in the genre and a cult classic, celebrated for its inventive low-budget horror and dark humour. Campbell’s physical comedy and deadpan delivery earned him a fiercely loyal global fanbase.

Colleagues in the film industry and fans have flooded social media with support, echoing his confidence that this chapter, though challenging, will not define him.
