Drop catches, out cheaply: Abhishek Sharma endures horror night at Eden Gardens

Abhishek Sharma endured a horror night when India faced West Indies in a must-win Super 8 clash of the T20 World Cup 2026 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, March 1. The left-hander’s struggles in the tournament continued, adding to what has been a largely disappointing campaign. He began the competition with three consecutive ducks and, apart from a lone half-century against Zimbabwe, has looked far from his fluent best.

In the virtual quarterfinal against West Indies, Abhishek appeared completely out of sorts. He put down two crucial catches in the field, proving costly for India, and then failed to make an impact with the bat. His scratchy 10 off 12 balls ended when left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein dismissed him, summing up a forgettable outing under the Eden lights.

HOW ABHISHEK STRUGGLED IN THE FIELD

Abhishek endured a difficult evening in the field after India opted to bowl first at Eden Gardens. The youngster had an early opportunity to make an impact but failed to hold on to a straightforward chance. Roston Chase, opening the batting in international cricket for the first time, miscued a slower delivery from Jasprit Bumrah high towards extra cover.

Abhishek tracked back, settled under it and got both hands to the ball, but spilled the sitter, leaving the Indian dugout visibly disappointed. Bumrah, characteristically calm, showed little reaction as he walked back to his mark.

The reprieve proved costly. Chase capitalised on the lifeline and went on to top-score for West Indies with a brisk 40 off 25 balls, striking five fours and a six.

Abhishek’s struggles continued in the penultimate over when he grassed another chance, this time offering Rovman Powell a lifeline off Arshdeep Singh, who was unlucky not to claim the wicket.

Running in from deep mid-wicket, Abhishek dived forward but failed to hold on as the ball popped out on impact with the turf, compounding a forgettable night in the field.

ABHISHEK FAILS WITH THE BAT

Abhishek’s stay at the crease was a scratchy one from the outset. Off the very first ball, Hosein tossed one up on leg stump and Abhishek could only push it gently back. He found a boundary soon after, carving a wide delivery over extra cover for four, but the fluency was fleeting. Hosein kept varying his pace and length, and Abhishek struggled to dominate, missing a lofted attempt outside off and failing to pierce the infield.

Against Matthew Forde’s pace, the discomfort became more evident. After pulling one short ball for four, he was hurried by a sharp delivery that struck his helmet while attempting another pull, forcing a brief concussion check. The timing simply wasn’t there.

The pressure built, and in the third over, Abhishek went for an ambitious pull off a back-of-a-length ball from Hosein. He failed to middle it, offering a simple catch to Shimron Hetmyer at deep square leg.
