Sanath Jayasuriya to step down as Sri Lanka coach after forgetful T20 World Cup run?

Sri Lanka head coach Sanath Jayasuriya has hinted that he could step away from his role following the team’s disappointing T20 World Cup 2026 campaign at home, though not immediately. While expressing pride in the progress made during his tenure, Jayasuriya suggested he would be open to stepping aside if Sri Lanka Cricket finds a suitable successor.

Speaking after Sri Lanka’s 5-run loss to Pakistan on Saturday, Jayasuriya indicated that discussions about his future are still pending, with his current contract running until June 2026. With a limited-overs tour of Afghanistan scheduled for March, the board may prefer continuity in the short term even as it begins exploring replacement options.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Jayasuriya said:

“I thought I should give that title to someone else. That’s why I mentioned two months ago during the England series that I have no plans staying here.”

“I feel sorry about how the World Cup ended. I could have taken this team forward for one and a half years. We moved up in rankings across formats and took the team to better positions.”

“My contract ends in June. I have not given my official decision to Sri Lanka Cricket yet. I need to discuss with them what comes next.”

HOW WAS SRI LANKA’S T20 WORLD CUP 2026?

Sri Lanka’s campaign never really gained sustained momentum. After progressing from the group stage despite a shock loss to Zimbabwe, hopes of a turnaround faded quickly in the Super 8 phase.

Back-to-back defeats against England, New Zealand and Pakistan ended their semifinal hopes. The loss to Pakistan was particularly painful, with Sri Lanka falling just five runs short while chasing 213 despite a blistering unbeaten 76 from captain Dasun Shanaka.

The early exit extended a worrying trend for the 2014 champions, who have now failed to reach the semifinals in five straight T20 World Cup editions.

JAYASURIYA’S TENURE AS SRI LANKA HEAD COACH

Jayasuriya took charge in mid-2024, initially as interim coach before being handed the full-time role later that year.

His tenure saw notable highs outside the shortest format. Sri Lanka registered their first ODI bilateral series win over India in 27 years in August 2024. They followed it up with a Test victory at The Oval and a 2-0 home Test series win against New Zealand.

However, consistency in T20 cricket remained elusive. Sri Lanka struggled in the Asia Cup and underwhelmed in the tri-series in Pakistan before the World Cup setback.

Across formats, Sri Lanka played 76 matches under Jayasuriya, winning 34, reflecting steady progress despite recent frustrations in T20 cricket.

With Sri Lanka Cricket now in talks with potential foreign candidates, Jayasuriya’s future may soon be decided, but for now, the former captain remains in reflection mode after a campaign that ended earlier than hoped.
