Fresh satellite imagery released over the weekend has revealed plumes of black smoke rising over parts of Dubai, offering one of the clearest visual confirmations yet of the impact of Iran’s ongoing retaliatory strikes across the Gulf.
Images captured on March 1 show smoke columns near key coastal and urban zones, including areas around Jebel Ali port and the Palm Jumeirah, following a large-scale barrage of Iranian drones and missiles targeting United States assets and regional allies.
According to UAE authorities, hundreds of aerial threats were launched towards the country, most of which were intercepted by air defence systems. However, falling debris from intercepted projectiles triggered fires and caused damage at multiple locations in Dubai, including infrastructure linked to the port and nearby commercial districts.
Satellite comparisons underline how sharply the situation has changed within days. Imagery from February 24 showed Dubai’s uninterrupted skyline, ordered highways and artificial islands operating normally. By March 1, dark smoke marks and burn zones were visible from space – rare scenes for a city long viewed as insulated from regional conflict.
Authorities confirmed that fires broke out at Jebel Ali port after debris from an aerial interception ignited facilities, while incidents were also reported in parts of Palm Jumeirah and near landmark hotels. Dubai International Airport and other critical infrastructure experienced disruptions as emergency responses were activated.
The strikes form part of Iran’s retaliation following joint US-Israeli military action earlier in the week, dramatically widening the geographical spread of the conflict across West Asia. Across the UAE, at least three people have been killed and dozens injured since the attacks began, officials said.
For decades, Dubai has been seen as a stable commercial and lifestyle hub amid turbulence elsewhere in the Middle East, with expatriates accounting for nearly 90 per cent of its population. The appearance of missile interceptions, explosions and smoke rising over luxury waterfront developments has unsettled that perception, even as authorities stress that defence systems prevented far greater damage.
While cleanup operations continue and fires have largely been contained, the latest satellite images underscore a broader reality emerging across the Gulf: the region’s economic centres are no longer geographically removed from escalating military confrontation.
