T20 World Cup: ICC working on alternate flight plans after US-Israel’s Iran strikes

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has activated comprehensive contingency plans to safeguard players, officials and staff involved in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East that has disrupted key global travel routes.

A full-blown conflict erupted on Saturday after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran, prompting retaliation from Tehran and its allies, Hezbollah and the Houthis. Missiles were fired towards Tel Aviv and US bases in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain, with explosions reported in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. One person, described as Asian, died in the UAE after falling debris struck the ground when Iranian missiles were intercepted by air defence systems.

While the crisis has no direct bearing on matches being played in India and Sri Lanka, the ICC acknowledged that the situation could affect travel plans for many involved in the tournament. A significant number of players, team officials, match referees, broadcast personnel and event staff rely on Gulf hub airports — particularly Dubai International Airport — as major transit points when travelling to and from international assignments.

With the tournament entering its decisive phase, the global governing body moved swiftly to minimise disruption and ensure the safety of everyone connected with the event.

“The safety and well-being of every individual connected to our event is the ICC’s highest priority,” an ICC spokesperson said. “We have already mobilised our travel, logistics and security teams, and are working around the clock to ensure that all stakeholders can return home safely, with minimal disruption.”

The spokesperson also urged caution for travelling supporters. “We would also urge fans who have travelled or were planning to travel for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 to monitor closely and adhere to advisories being issued and consider all factors before undertaking any further international travel.”

Dubai has long served as a key aviation hub for international cricket, connecting players and officials from across continents. Any disruption in Gulf airspace has the potential to impact travel schedules, particularly with teams and personnel expected to depart soon after completing their World Cup commitments.

In response, the ICC’s travel and logistics department has been working closely with major international airlines to identify and secure alternative routes. These include potential connections through European, South Asian and South-East Asian hubs, ensuring flexibility in travel planning if Gulf routes remain affected.

WHERE WILL THE REMAINING MATCHES BE PLAYED?

  1. South Africa vs Zimbabwe in Delhi on March 1
  2. India vs West Indies in Kolkata on March 1
  3. Semi-final 1 in Kolkata/Colombo on March 4
  4. Semifinal 2 in Mumbai on March 5
  5. Final in Ahmedabad/Colomo on March 8

Security consultants appointed by the ICC are also in constant contact with relevant authorities, monitoring developments and issuing real-time advisories. A dedicated ICC Travel Support Desk has been established to assist teams and personnel with revised travel arrangements and provide immediate support where required.

Despite the geopolitical tensions, the ICC reiterated its commitment to ensuring the tournament continues smoothly and safely. With contingency measures now in place, the governing body remains focused on delivering the remainder of the T20 World Cup without disruption, while prioritising the safety and well-being of all participants and stakeholders.
