Who else could grab headlines on a regular basis than LeBron James? On top of that, if the Lakers legend gives a shout-out for someone, that becomes the talk of the town. The four-time NBA MVP used his Instagram to spotlight Atlanta punk band The Paradox after their single “Get The Message” climbed to No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart. The milestone marked a first for an all-Black group in that category. It didn’t take long for fans from sports and rock circles to begin sharing the post. James’ surprising shout out extended the band’s exposure far beyond the punk scene.
TMZ Sports caught up with band members Eric Dangerfield, Donald Bryant, Christopher Bernard, and Percy Crews soon after the moment went viral. The conversation of the band with the outlet reflected raw excitement. The group described the moment as hard to believe but they appreciated the gratitude. For a band that began as an idea less than two years ago, the public nod from one of basketball’s most influential figures meant a lot.
The Paradox reacts to LeBron James’ shoutout
The Paradox members were all excited after getting the heartfelt shout out from the NBA legend. Of course, LeBron James is arguably one of the greatest of all time in the game and he has an astonishing cultural influence.
Speaking with TMZ, the members of the band shared their honest reactions. “That’s insane!!” the band told TMZ. “LeBron is one of the GOATs. “
They continued, “To know he supports what we do, much less knows we exist, is mind-blowing. A little over a year and a half ago, this was an idea I was throwing around in my head, and now LeBron James is posting our band on his Insta story.” The band added, “Life doesn’t feel real, and we’re just so happy and grateful to be here. LEBRON JAMES!!!!!!😭😭😭.”
Their reaction reflects how rare this achievement is. “Get The Message” reaching No. 1 on Alternative Airplay signals a shift in a genre long viewed as exclusive. The Paradox has already shared stages with Green Day and The Offspring, two pillars of punk rock. Travis Barker also joined their song “Bender,” adding veteran credibility to their growing catalog.
LeBron James expands his cultural footprint beyond basketball
LeBron’s support of music artists is consistent with his off-court profile. Last year in July, he also appeared alongside Tyler, The Creator in the video for “Stop Playing With Me.” In one lyric, Tyler raps, “Caught the plate with Mav, Bron there too,” referencing James and longtime business partner Maverick Carter as they appear on screen.
James, now 41, is nearing the end of his basketball career. It is fair to assume that fans would see more of such cultural influence in the coming years.
