Final SIR list out for poll-bound Tamil Nadu, over 74 lakh names dropped from roll

The Election Commission on Monday published the final electoral roll for Tamil Nadu following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Over 74 lakh names were dropped from the electoral list after SIR exercise.

The SIR exercise was conducted in the state between October 2025 and February 2026. This included the publication of the draft SIR list and the challenges to the list.

Speaking in Chennai, Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik said the total electorate now stands at 5.6 crore, which includes 2.7 crore men, 2.8 crore women, and 7,617 third gender voters.

According to the state election panel, Tamil Nadu had 6.4 crore electors on the rolls as of October 27, 2025. Following the enumeration phase of the SIR exercise, the draft electoral roll published on December 19 showed a reduced total of 5.4 crore electors.

During the claims and objections period held from December 19 to January 30, 2026, the Commission added 27.53 lakh eligible voters and removed 4.23 lakh ineligible entries.

After incorporating these changes, the final electoral roll was published on February 23, with the total electorate standing at 5.6 crore.

In Coimbatore district, the total number of electors now stands at 26.9 lakh. Chengalpattu district has 22,60,036 voters, while Ramanathapuram district shows a total of 11,23,029 voters, and Tiruvallur district has a total electorate of 31.5 lakh.

The updated electoral rolls will be used for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
