After Ranthambore National Park, now mobile phones banned in Sariska, Rajasthan? What we know so far

The usage of mobile phones was banned in Ranthanbore National Park recently, following Supreme Court directions. In a similar move, it is being said that phones have been banned in Sariska Tiger Reserve too, which is another prominent home of tigers in Rajasthan. This information has been quoted by several media websites; however, the Times of India did not find any official confirmation of the same during the filing of this report.

Let’s find out more this:

Ranthambore National Park is among the most famous wildlife attractions in India and Rajasthan. It is where thousands of tourists visit annually with the hope of seeing the magnificent Bengal tigers in their natural habitat, along with other animals.

While the destination has always balanced tourism with jungle protocols, off late there have been significant cases of human interference. It is mostly regarding the use of mobile phone use for photography and content creation including reels. As per forest officials, the use of mobile phones during safari results in noise and sudden movements by tourists. This is all extremely disturbing for the furry residents of the jungle.

As per new rules, before embarking on a safari, tourists must leave their mobile phones with the safari guide or driver. The devices are taken well care of and are secured in a designated container. These are returned to the owners only after the end of the safari. It is not allowed to take cell phones out during the entire safari, whether for photography, calls, video recording or any other activity. The ban is applicable to all safari participants across all core tourism zones and safari routes.

Approving the ban, Divisional Forest Officer (Tourism) Sanjeev Sharma said, “The Supreme Court clearly held that the use of mobile phones within tourism zones of the core habitat of Tiger Reserves is not permitted. The order was issued to strictly implement these directions.”

Ranthambore

As per the

official website of Ranthambore National Park,, “Officials at Sariska Tiger Reserve have confirmed that a similar mobile phone ban in tiger reserves will soon be enforced there as well. Wildlife enthusiasts are continuing to advocate for stricter enforcement of the laws prohibiting people from crowding around wild animals, particularly in Jhalana Safari Reserve. “: Mobiles were causing frequent disruption to forest dwellers. Frequent ringing, continuous videos and loud conversations are not pleasant for sensitive species like tigers. : With mobile phones in hands, tourists are often seen to lean out of vehicles to get close-up shots of wild animals without understanding the danger involved in such behaviors. The department believes that without mobile distractions, tourists are more likely to follow safety protocols and pay attention to guides. : When a tiger or other animal is sighted, several safari vehicles converge at one spot. The ban aims to eliminate this problem.

The mobile phone ban has been established in compliance with Supreme Court guidelines. If anyone is caught violating the rules, they may face penalties under existing wildlife protection laws and authorities may initiate legal action. DFO Sharma warned of legal actions, fines and FIR for the violators. However, under the order, digital cameras and DSLR cameras can be carried inside.

The decision has received a mixed response. While wildlife lovers have welcomed the rule, there are some who have expressed concern calling it an inconvenience.
