Grey’s Anatomy cast pay tribute to Eric Dane after his death: He was a light

The cast and creators of Grey’s Anatomy have paid tribute to actor Eric Dane following his death at the age of 53. Dane, who portrayed Dr Mark Sloan, popularly known as “McSteamy”, died on February 19, 2026, after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Dane appeared in 145 episodes of the long-running ABC series and became one of its most recognisable faces. Following news of his death, several members of the Grey’s Anatomy family remembered him as a warm, generous presence on set.

Actor Kim Raver, who plays Dr Teddy Altman on the show, described Dane as a source of light. “Eric was a light,” she said. “You’d see it effortlessly shine from him on the set of Grey’s as well as when he was with Rebecca and the girls. With a mischievous look and perfect comedic timing, he could deliver a line that would floor you. You will be missed (sic).”

In a joint statement, ABC and 20th Television expressed their condolences, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Eric Dane. His remarkable talent and unforgettable presence on Grey’s Anatomy left a lasting impact on audiences around the world, and his courage and grace during his battle with ALS inspired so many. Our hearts are with his family, friends and colleagues, as well as the many fans whose lives were touched by his work.”

Dane publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025, less than a year before his death.

At the ALS Network Champions for Cures & Care Gala last month, Ellen Pompeo, who starred alongside Dane for several seasons, recalled reaching out to him after learning about his illness. “As soon as I heard about his diagnosis, I texted him and said, ‘I’m here if you want to speak,’” Pompeo said. “My phone rang 30 seconds later.”

Executive producer Krista Vernoff also shared memories of Dane’s return to the show in 2021. Recalling her call to him during the pandemic, Vernoff said she asked if he would reprise his role despite the challenges of filming at the time. “I told him the world needed joy — and Mark and Lexie are joy. He said, ‘Where and when?’” she said, adding that Dane was known for his warmth and affection on set.

Dane first appeared on Grey’s Anatomy in season two as a guest star before becoming a series regular from season three. His character went on to anchor several of the show’s major storylines. Series creator Shonda Rhimes has previously said that Mark Sloane was one of her favourite characters to write.

Dane’s final regular appearance on the series came in season nine, though he later returned for a special episode in 2021.
