‘Full blown North Korea vibes’: Huge banner with Trump’s face displayed at Justice Department HQ sparks backlash

A large banner bearing the face of US President Donald Trump has been displayed on the exterior of the Department of Justice (DOJ) headquarters in Washington, DC, drawing sharp reactions and fuelling debate over the administration’s relationship with federal law enforcement.

Photographs circulating online show the banner hanging between two columns of the Robert F. Kennedy Building, the historic home of the DOJ. The signage reads “Make America Safe Again,” a variation of Trump’s signature campaign slogan, and comes as similar banners have also been seen outside other federal agencies in the capital.

The DOJ said in a statement that the display was meant to celebrate “250 years of our great country and our historic work to make America safe again at President Trump’s direction.”

However, critics argue the banner represents a visible assertion of presidential influence over an agency traditionally expected to operate independently.

Ex-FBI chief Comey criticises banner

Former FBI director James Comey was among those who criticised the move. Taking to Instagram, Comey called the banner “sickening to see.” He also remarked sarcastically that the administration “forgot to cover the inscription” on one side of the building that says: ‘Where law ends tyranny begins.’

The banner has appeared amid ongoing scrutiny of the Justice Department’s actions under Trump’s administration, including investigations into several political rivals and officials perceived to be opponents of the president.

How netizens reacted

The banner also triggered intense reactions on social media, with users drawing comparisons to authoritarian regimes and questioning government spending.

Taking to X, one of the users wrote, “Insane….they’re hanging a giant Trump banner on the DOJ building….full blown North Korea vibes.”

“This banner of Donald Trump on the DOJ headquarters building is giving 1930s Germany vibes,” wrote another. “You work 40hrs a week. Over 30% of your income is stolen by the government. That money pays for the banner, the building and everyone’s salary that works there, “ the third user wrote.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi has emerged as one of Trump’s strongest defenders within the administration. She has positioned herself as the president’s main “supporter and protector,” repeatedly backing the administration’s policies and dismissing claims that the DOJ has been politicised.

Trump officials have rejected accusations that the Justice Department is being used to target political opponents. They have instead argued that previous investigations into Trump were politically motivated and emphasised that the administration’s actions are focused on enforcing law and order, including tackling illegal immigration and violent crime.
