India Beats US, China in Global Responsible Nations Index 2025

India Outranks US and China in Global Sustainability Ranking

India has secured the 16th position in the latest Responsible Nations Index, placing it ahead of major economies like the United States and China. The ranking evaluates countries on their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance.

Key Takeaways

  • India ranked 16th globally with a score of 68.2/100.
  • It outperformed the US, China, and many developed nations.
  • Singapore, Sweden, and Denmark took the top three spots.
  • The index assessed 193 countries across 32 sustainability indicators.

India’s Performance and Report Insights

The index, compiled by the Singapore-based Green Future Index (GFI) research firm, measures a nation’s readiness for a sustainable future. India was categorised as “moderately responsible.”

The report praised India’s “significant strides” in renewable energy expansion and digital public infrastructure. However, it flagged persistent challenges in air quality, waste management, and income inequality.

“India’s position reflects its complex development trajectory. It is a leader in low-cost solar power and digital inclusion, yet faces immense pressure from its population size and rapid urbanisation,” the report stated.

Regional and Global Standings

In the Asia-Pacific region, India placed 5th, trailing Singapore (1st globally), Japan (8th), South Korea (10th), and Malaysia (15th). China ranked 25th, while the United States did not feature in the top 15. Pakistan was placed 48th.

The bottom five countries were Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia, Afghanistan, and Eritrea.

A Forward-Looking Metric

The GFI emphasised that the index is designed to measure current commitment, not historical legacy. It serves as a crucial tool for investors, policymakers, and citizens assessing a nation’s sustainable future.
