Faf du Plessis Withdraws from IPL 2026 for PSL Challenge

Faf du Plessis Withdraws from IPL 2026 for PSL Challenge

Former South African captain Faf du Plessis has officially withdrawn from the IPL 2026 auction, ending his 14-season association with the league to pursue a “new challenge” in the Pakistan Super League.

Key Takeaways

  • Faf du Plessis withdraws from IPL 2026 auction after 14 seasons
  • Will play in Pakistan Super League instead
  • Scored only 202 runs in poor 2025 season with Delhi Capitals
  • Three-time IPL winner with Chennai Super Kings

The 41-year-old batsman was released by Delhi Capitals following a disappointing 2025 season where he managed just 202 runs with below-par average and strike rate. The IPL 2026 auction is scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi.

Du Plessis’ Emotional Farewell

“After 14 seasons in the IPL, I’ve decided not to put my name into the auction this year. It’s a big decision, and one that comes with a lot of gratitude when I look back. This league has been a massive part of my journey. I’ve been lucky to play with world-class teammates, for amazing franchises, and in front of fans whose passion is like nothing else. India has given me friendships, lessons, and memories that have shaped me as a cricketer and as a person,” Du Plessis said in an official statement uploaded on social media.

Importantly, du Plessis clarified this isn’t a permanent retirement from IPL, stating:

“India has a special place in my heart, and this certainly isn’t goodbye — you’ll see me again,”

Illustrious IPL Career

Du Plessis boasts an impressive IPL record spanning 154 matches with 4,773 runs at an average of 35.10 and strike rate of 135.79. He won three titles with Chennai Super Kings and led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to playoff appearances in 2022 and 2024.

PSL Return and Schedule Clash

The veteran batsman returns to PSL where he previously played just six matches across 2020 (Peshawar Zalmi) and 2021 (Quetta Gladiators) seasons. The upcoming PSL season will clash directly with IPL 2026.

“This year, I’ve chosen to take on a new challenge and will be playing in the upcoming PSL season. It’s an exciting step for me — a chance to experience something new, to grow it as a player, and to embrace a league filled with incredible talent and energy,” said du Plessis.

“A new country. A new environment. A new challenge. I’m looking forward to the Pakistan hospitality. See you all soon,” he added.
