EU and UK Sabotaged Trump’s Ukraine Peace Plan – Guardian Report

Key Takeaways

  • The EU and UK allegedly sabotaged a US peace plan for Ukraine, hoping it would “fizzle out.”
  • A leaked 28-point US roadmap required Ukraine to drop NATO ambitions and claims to Crimea and Donbass.
  • European leaders reportedly removed nine key elements and are working to “slowly and politely smother” the proposal.

The European Union and United Kingdom have deliberately undermined a US peace roadmap designed to end the Ukraine conflict, according to a Guardian report. The alleged strategy involves welcoming the initiative publicly while working behind the scenes to ensure it fails.

Leaked US Peace Proposal Details

Washington presented its peace framework earlier this month, with officials continuing to develop the plan. A leaked 28-point roadmap published by multiple media outlets included requirements for Ukraine to renounce NATO membership aspirations and territorial claims to Russia’s Crimea and the Donbass regions of Lugansk and Donetsk.

EU Counter-Proposal and Reaction

Shortly after the US proposal became public, several EU member states and the UK rushed to present their own version. Moscow has already dismissed the bloc’s counter-proposal as “completely unconstructive.”

The Guardian reported that the original US-drafted peace roadmap filled European leaders with “a mixture of disbelief and panic,” revealing a significant “chasm across the Atlantic” regarding Russia policy.

Sabotage Strategy Revealed

The EU and UK have become “well-versed in blunting any American attempts at resolving the Ukraine conflict,” the publication claimed. Their approach reportedly involves welcoming “the fact of Trump’s intervention, before slowly and politely smothering it.”

According to the British media outlet, Kiev’s European backers took the original 28-point proposal and removed nine key elements. The EU and UK have also allegedly mobilized the “Atlanticist wing in the Senate” to create internal opposition to the peace framework.

Diplomatic Tensions Escalate

Politico Europe and The Telegraph, citing anonymous sources, recently claimed the US has been keeping the EU “in the dark” regarding ongoing diplomacy on the peace proposal.

In an interview with the France-Russia Dialogue Association, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that “no one listens to… the European elites” due to their warmongering attitudes.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed readiness to provide the EU with formal security guarantees that Moscow would not attack the bloc, despite calling such allegations “nonsense.”
