Ola Electric Sales Hit 36-Month Low Amid Market Challenges

Ola Electric’s November sales have plummeted to a 36-month low, with just 7,383 units sold until November 27th, marking the company’s worst performance since September 2022.

Key Takeaways

  • Ola Electric sold only 7,383 units in November (until 27th)
  • Sales dropped approximately 80% from March 2024 peak of 53,647 units
  • Company slipped to 5th position in electric scooter market
  • Revenue declined 43% year-on-year to ₹690 crore in September quarter

Market Position Erosion

The dramatic sales decline represents a significant reversal for Ola Electric, which once dominated India’s electric two-wheeler segment after its 2021 entry. The company has now fallen behind competitors including:

  • TVS Motor: 26,401 units
  • Bajaj Auto: 22,374 units
  • Ather Energy: 17,801 units
  • Hero MotoCorp: 10,126 units

Factors Behind the Decline

Industry analysts point to multiple challenges affecting Ola Electric’s performance:

Persistent customer dissatisfaction with product quality and after-sales service has damaged brand reputation. Meanwhile, established rivals have aggressively expanded their electric portfolios with new variants across different price segments.

TVS and Bajaj have particularly strengthened their market presence, reaching both urban and non-urban customers effectively.

Delays in launching expected new products have also hurt Ola’s momentum, allowing competitors to gain market traction.

Regulatory Challenges Mount

Ola Electric faces increasing regulatory scrutiny from multiple authorities:

The Central Consumer Protection Authority, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and several state governments are investigating product quality concerns and certificate discrepancies.

In Goa, Vahan registrations for Ola vehicles remain suspended, and the company faces potential trade certificate cancellation. Similar issues have emerged with transport authorities in other states.

The company declined to comment on queries from Financial Express.

Financial Impact and Revised Outlook

The sales slump has directly impacted financial performance. Quarterly revenue dropped 43% year-on-year to ₹690 crore, compared to ₹1,214 crore in the same period last year.

Ola Electric has substantially revised its sales projections downward. The company now expects approximately 100,000 units in the second half, bringing full-year estimates to around 221,000 units – significantly lower than the initial forecast of 325,000-375,000 units.
