Winter Storm Threatens Flight Delays, Hazardous Travel for 50 Million

Key Takeaways

  • Major winter storm threatens 50 million Americans across Midwest and Great Lakes
  • Flight delays and hazardous road conditions expected during post-Thanksgiving travel
  • Snow accumulations of 6-12+ inches predicted across multiple states
  • Chicago, Milwaukee, Grand Rapids airports already issuing alerts

A powerful winter storm is set to disrupt travel for millions of Americans this weekend, with flight delays and dangerous road conditions expected across the Midwest and Great Lakes region. The National Weather Service warns travel could become “very difficult to nearly impossible” as the storm hits during peak post-Thanksgiving travel periods.

Storm Impact and Affected Regions

Winter Storm Watches are active across nine states: Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, South Dakota and Minnesota. Forecasters predict heavy snowfall with accumulations of six to twelve inches or more, particularly north of Interstate 70 and along Interstate 90.

The heaviest snow is expected across central and northern Illinois, eastern Iowa, southern and eastern Wisconsin, and lower Michigan. Some locations could see totals exceeding eight to ten inches.

Travel Disruptions and Airport Alerts

Major airports in Chicago, Milwaukee and Grand Rapids have already issued ground-delay and de-icing alerts beginning Thursday night. Airlines are proactively canceling or delaying flights as crews pre-position equipment ahead of the weekend storm.

The timing is particularly problematic as millions of travelers are still returning home from Thanksgiving celebrations. The NWS recommends delaying travel if possible, keeping emergency kits in vehicles, and allowing extra time for unavoidable trips.

Regional Forecast Details

Wisconsin: High probability (70-95%) of 6+ inches along and south of I-90, with southwest Wisconsin and Fox Valley to Green Bay seeing the heaviest accumulations.

Michigan: Lake-effect snow will add to totals along Lake Michigan shoreline, with Ottawa and Muskegon counties potentially receiving 8-11 inches combined.

Chicago Area: Winter Storm Watch for at least 6 inches, with locally higher amounts possible in northwest Indiana and northeast Illinois.

Western Regions: Sioux Falls area expecting 6-10 inches across northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota, while Omaha and Des Moines face snow mixed with light ice and gusty winds reducing visibility.

Extended Weather Impacts

The storm system will move from west to east, beginning in the Plains on Friday afternoon and spreading into the Great Lakes by Saturday. Some areas may experience prolonged conditions lasting into Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, a sharp cold snap will hit the Eastern US, with temperatures plunging up to 15 degrees below average. Freeze warnings have been issued for southern Georgia and northern Florida.

AccuWeather meteorologists note: ‘As the storm swings into southern Canada later in the weekend, a mixture of snow, sleet and rain is forecast for the northern portions of the Appalachians and the areas surrounding Lakes Erie and Ontario.’

This includes northern and western Ohio, Pennsylvania, western/central/northern New York, and northwestern New England from late Saturday night to Sunday.
