Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Launched: OnePlus 15R Gets It First

Qualcomm has unveiled its next-generation flagship processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Mobile Platform, promising significant performance gains and advanced AI capabilities for premium smartphones. The chipset targets growing consumer demand for superior camera technology, gaming performance, and on-device intelligence.

Performance and AI Capabilities

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 features a custom-built Qualcomm Oryon CPU capable of reaching peak speeds up to 3.8 GHz. This delivers a substantial 36% overall performance improvement and 76% better web browsing responsiveness compared to previous generations.

For gaming enthusiasts, the Qualcomm Adreno GPU incorporates a sliced architecture that boosts gaming and graphics performance by 11%. The enhanced on-device intelligence, powered by the Qualcomm AI Engine and Hexagon NPU, achieves up to 46% improved AI performance, enabling powerful agentic AI assistants.

A notable new feature is Instant Wake, which uses the Qualcomm Sensing Hub to combine microphone and sensor inputs. This allows users to instantly activate their AI assistant simply by picking up their device.

First Device Confirmation

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will power flagship devices from multiple global manufacturers including iQoo, Honor, Meizu, Motorola, OnePlus, and Vivo.

While Qualcomm hasn’t officially announced which device will debut first, OnePlus has confirmed that its upcoming OnePlus 15R will be the inaugural phone featuring the latest chipset. The launch is scheduled for December 17.

“OnePlus has always led the way in speed, and I’m thrilled that OnePlus 15R, our new performance flagship, will be equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, one of the fastest and most powerful chipsets on the market,” said Robin Liu, CEO of OnePlus India.

Liu added, “We’ve worked closely with Qualcomm to ensure the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Mobile Platform is optimised for our users, and I’m excited to see how our users take to the OnePlus 15R when it launches later this year.”
