Hong Kong Fire: 36 Dead, 279 Missing in Wang Fuk Court Blaze

Hong Kong Fire: 36 Dead, 279 Missing in Wang Fuk Court Blaze

A devastating fire at Hong Kong’s Wang Fuk Court residential complex has claimed 36 lives, with 279 people reported missing. Three individuals have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with one of the deadliest blazes in the city’s history.

Key Developments

  • Casualties: 36 confirmed dead, including one firefighter; 279 people missing
  • Injured: 29 hospitalized, with 7 in critical condition
  • Arrests: Three people detained on manslaughter suspicion
  • Scale: Fire spread across seven high-rise buildings in Tai Po district
  • Response: Over 140 fire trucks and 60 ambulances deployed

Fire Investigation Underway

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee confirmed that police and fire services have established a dedicated investigation team to determine the cause of the blaze. The fire began mid-afternoon Wednesday and continued burning into early Thursday before being brought under control around midnight.

How the Fire Spread

Officials reported the fire originated at external scaffolding on a 32-storey building before spreading inside the structure and to nearby towers, possibly accelerated by winds. The blaze ultimately affected seven buildings in the Wang Fuk Court complex, which houses approximately 4,800 residents across eight towers with nearly 2,000 flats.

Rescue Challenges

Firefighters faced extreme difficulties during rescue operations. Derek Armstrong Chan, deputy director of Fire Service operations, explained: “The temperature inside the buildings concerned is very high. It’s difficult for us to enter the building and go upstairs to conduct firefighting and rescue operations.”

Falling debris and scaffolding further complicated efforts to reach trapped residents, some of whom remained inside affected buildings through Wednesday night.

Aftermath and Response

The tragedy has left many residents homeless, with Tai Po district officials establishing temporary shelters. Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed condolences for the victims, including the fallen firefighter, and called for maximum efforts to extinguish the blaze and minimize casualties.

The Wang Fuk Court fire represents one of Hong Kong’s worst residential fire disasters, with the community now facing the challenging task of recovery and accounting for the missing.
