Sam Altman Calls OpenAI’s AI Device Prototype Jaw-Droppingly Good

Key Takeaways

  • OpenAI’s first AI device prototype is described as ‘jaw-droppingly good’ by Sam Altman.
  • The AI hardware products could launch publicly within two years (around 2027).
  • Potential devices include smart speakers, glasses, voice recorders, and wearable pins.
  • Manufacturing partnerships are already secured with Apple’s assemblers Luxshare and Goertek.

OpenAI, in partnership with former Apple designer Jony Ive, is developing revolutionary AI-powered hardware devices, with the first prototypes already receiving glowing reviews from CEO Sam Altman.

The company confirmed that multiple AI devices could reach consumers within the next two years, suggesting a potential 2027 launch timeframe.

“We have the first prototypes. I can’t believe how jaw-dropping good the work is and how exciting it is,” Altman said.

Beyond the iPhone: A New Era of Calm Technology

While acknowledging the iPhone as the ‘crowning achievement of consumer products,’ Altman criticized modern devices for becoming chaotic digital spaces that constantly demand attention.

The new OpenAI devices aim to fundamentally change this dynamic by creating AI that genuinely understands users’ lives and knows precisely when to engage and when to remain silent.

“You can then go for a vibe that is not like, you know, walking through Times Square and getting bumped into and having all this stuff compete for your attention. But like sitting in the most beautiful cabin by a lake in the mountains and sort of just enjoying the peace and calm, and I think this actually just isn’t possible in the pre-AI world of technology,” Altman stated.

Jony Ive’s Design Philosophy

Discussing design choices, Ive emphasized his preference for solutions that balance deceptive simplicity with sophisticated intelligence.

“I love solutions that teeter on the appearing, almost naive, in their simplicity. And I also love incredibly intelligent, sophisticated products that you want to touch and you feel no intimidation, and you want to use almost carelessly — that you will use them almost without thought.”

Potential OpenAI Hardware Products

According to earlier reports, OpenAI is developing a range of hardware including:

  • A smart speaker without a display
  • Smart glasses
  • A digital voice recorder
  • A wearable pin

Manufacturing Partnerships Secured

OpenAI has reportedly secured manufacturing contracts with Apple’s key partners. The company has engaged Luxshare, a major assembler of iPhones and AirPods, to produce one of the consumer devices.

Additionally, OpenAI has approached Goertek, another Apple assembler responsible for AirPods, HomePods, and Apple Watches, to supply speaker modules for the upcoming devices.
