Apple Layoffs: Dozens of Sales Jobs Cut in Strategic Restructuring

Apple Confirms Sales Team Layoffs in Strategic Restructuring

Apple has laid off dozens of employees from its sales division as part of a major restructuring effort. The job cuts, confirmed by Bloomberg, target teams serving business, education, and government clients.

Key Takeaways

  • Dozens of sales roles eliminated across multiple teams
  • Affected employees have until January 20 to find new positions
  • Longtime managers with 20-30 years at Apple impacted
  • Company continues hiring despite the cuts

Which Teams Were Affected?

The layoffs hit various parts of Apple’s sales organization, with some teams experiencing deeper cuts than others. While Apple hasn’t disclosed exact numbers, the affected positions include:

  • Account managers handling large businesses, schools, and government agencies
  • Staff at Apple’s briefing centers where major clients view product demonstrations

Notably, the cuts extended to veteran managers with 20-30 years of service. The government sales team, which works with agencies like the US Defense Department and Justice Department, was particularly affected. This team had already faced operational challenges due to the recent 43-day government shutdown and spending reductions.

Apple’s Official Statement

Apple confirmed the reorganization while downplaying its scale. A company spokesperson stated:

“To connect with even more customers, we are making some changes in our sales team that affect a small number of roles. We are continuing to hire, and those employees can apply for new roles.”

The sales organization reports directly to CEO Tim Cook and is overseen by Vice President Mike Fenger. Earlier this year, Vivek Thakkar, Fenger’s deputy, expanded his responsibilities to manage all enterprise and education sales.

Transition Options for Affected Staff

Employees who lost their positions have until January 20 to secure new roles within Apple. Those unable to find internal positions will receive severance packages. The company has posted open sales positions on its careers website that laid-off employees can apply for.

The timing surprised many observers, given Apple’s strong financial performance. The company projects nearly $140 billion in sales for the December quarter, which would set a new record.

Strategic Shift Behind the Cuts

According to internal sources, the restructuring aims to simplify the sales team and eliminate overlapping responsibilities. Some employees believe the company is shifting more sales to third-party resellers, known as the “channel,” which many organizations prefer and could reduce Apple’s internal costs.

This approach contrasts with Apple’s typical aversion to layoffs. CEO Tim Cook has repeatedly described job cuts as a “last resort.” When reductions do occur, Apple typically structures them to avoid triggering WARN Act notifications that require advance notice of mass layoffs.

While Apple remains cautious about workforce reductions, other tech giants continue aggressive cost-cutting. Amazon recently announced plans to eliminate over 14,000 positions, while Meta cut hundreds of roles in its AI division.
