Delhi Enforces 50% Work From Home to Combat Severe Air Pollution
Delhi has implemented mandatory 50% work from home for all government and private offices as air quality deteriorates to severe levels. The measure, activated under Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), aims to reduce vehicular emissions and public exposure to hazardous air.
Key Directives
- All Delhi government offices to operate with 50% staff strength
- Private establishments must follow the same 50% work from home rule
- Administrative secretaries and department heads must attend office regularly
- Remaining staff required to work from home mandatorily
The Environment Department issued the formal order on Monday, November 24, 2025, invoking Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The directive applies to all offices operating within the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
This emergency response comes as Delhi’s air quality index reaches hazardous levels, prompting immediate action under the central government’s pollution control framework. The work from home mandate is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and associated pollution sources across the city.
