X’s Location Feature Exposes Foreign-Based MAGA Accounts
Elon Musk’s X platform has launched a new ‘About This Account’ transparency feature that reveals the geographical locations of users, unexpectedly exposing dozens of MAGA-branded accounts operating from outside the United States.
Key Findings
- Multiple right-wing influencer accounts claiming to be American actually operate from Russia, Pakistan, and Nigeria
- ‘MAGA Nation’ (400,000 followers) appears based in Eastern Europe
- ‘UltraMAGA Trump 2028’ account shown in Nigeria has been suspended
The feature allows users to see account registration countries by tapping on profile signup dates, along with username change history and download methods.
Platform Transparency Initiative
X described the tool as “an important first step to securing the integrity of the global town square” by improving transparency and helping users verify content authenticity.
“Seeing all of these MAGA accounts get exposed as foreign actors trying to destroy the United States is a complete vindication of Democrats, like myself and many on here, who have been warning about this,” wrote Democratic influencer Harry Sisson.
Accuracy Concerns Emerge
However, the feature faced criticism for apparent inaccuracies. Users noted discrepancies including:
- US internet personality Hank Green shown as based in Japan
- Massachusetts-based Avid Pro Tools displayed as located in Spain
X acknowledged data reliability issues, particularly for older accounts, and temporarily removed country registration information.
“There are a few rough edges that will be resolved by Tuesday,” stated Nikita Bier, X’s head of product. “If any data is incorrect, it will be updated periodically based on the best available information.”
